Founded in 2002 by students from PUC-Rio, the A Rocha da Gávea bloco (street band) is a renowned institution of Rio de Janeiro's Carnival. With over two decades of history, the bloco embodies the joy, energy, and community spirit that define this iconic celebration.
Identity and Purpose
A Rocha da Gávea is known for its contagious and inclusive atmosphere. The bloco promotes a sense of belonging, uniting revelers of all ages and backgrounds. Its parades are a vibrant spectacle, with a powerful bateria (percussion ensemble) led by the renowned Mestre Marfim and an ala (wing) of mestre-sala (master of ceremonies) and porta-bandeira (flag bearer) who parade with grace and precision.

The bloco's repertoire is a celebration of Brazilian musical diversity. From the tradition of samba-enredo to the lively beats of funk, A Rocha da Gávea offers an eclectic mix of genres that pleases everyone. The selection includes adapted versions of Brazilian classics, such as songs by Tim Maia, Jorge Benjor, and MC Marcinho.
Parades and Events
The main parade of A Rocha da Gávea is a highlight of Rio's Carnival, attracting crowds of 7,000 to 15,000 people. The bloco also participates in the "Quinta dos Blocos" (Bloco Thursday) project at Carioca da Gema and promotes special events called "A Rocha convida" (A Rocha invites), where it hosts other blocos to perform.
