In the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, the neighborhood of Bangu is home to the vibrant Bangay Folia, a carnival block that stands out for its inclusive energy and celebration of diversity.

History and Tradition

Bangay Folia emerged in 2016 as an initiative of the passionate samba dancer Sandra Andréa dos Santos. Her goal was to give visibility to LGBTQIA+ friends who used to work behind the scenes of Carnival. In 2021, the block evolved into the Bangay samba school, becoming the first LGBT samba school in Rio de Janeiro.

Bangay Folia is characterized by its eclectic music, ranging from traditional marches to 90s funk. The Bangay samba school features a powerful drum section, skilled passistas, and a master of ceremonies and flag bearer who enchant the audience.
