Batekoo
Batekoo is a Brazilian Carnival bloco that emerged from a project created in 2014 by Artur Santoro and Mauricio Sacramento. It was originally conceived as a party focused on the Black LGBTQIAPN+ community and their allies. The name 'Batekoo' is a combination of the slang term 'bater' (to hit) and 'koo' (buttocks), a provocative and empowering expression of freedom and sexuality.
The bloco's musical style is diverse, ranging from Brazilian funk and Afrobeat to hip-hop and electronic music. This eclectic mix reflects the diverse experiences and identities within the community it represents. Batekoo's parades are known for their vibrant energy, colorful costumes, and a strong sense of collective celebration. The bloco's performances are not just about entertainment; they are a form of cultural and political expression, challenging norms and advocating for greater visibility and acceptance.
Batekoo has grown to become one of Brazil's most influential and popular Carnival blocos, attracting thousands of participants annually. It has also expanded its activities to include workshops, debates, and other cultural events, furthering its mission of empowering marginalized communities. Batekoo is more than just a Carnival bloco; it’s a platform for social change, promoting inclusivity and diversity through music, dance, and activism. The bloco's parades typically occur in the streets of major cities across Brazil during Carnival, drawing large crowds of revelers and allies alike, and continuing to grow in notoriety every year.
