"Birita Mas Não Cai": The Block That Lifts Madureira Up During Carnival
The "Birita Mas Não Cai" carnival block is an explosion of joy and music that has enlivened the community of Madureira since 2017. Founded by members of GRES Portela, the block arose from a passion for samba and the desire to bring the carnival spirit to the streets.
A Name That Speaks for Itself
The block's name, "Birita Mas Não Cai" (Booze But Doesn't Fall), reflects its festive atmosphere. The word "birita" is slang for alcoholic beverage, while "não cai" (doesn't fall) indicates the revelers' ability to maintain joy and balance even after a few drinks.
Rhythm and Joy in the Streets
The block has its own drum corps called "Batuk dos Biritas" and official singers who thrill the crowd with a lively repertoire of samba. Its parades bring together between 500 and 1,000 people, creating a true spectacle through the streets.
Homages and Theme Songs
"Birita Mas Não Cai" pays homage to popular culture and Brazilian music in its parades. In 2019, the block paid tribute to the "Axé" rhythm of Salvador, Bahia. In addition, the block creates an official theme song for each year, such as the 2024 samba, "Mercadão de Madureira" (Madureira Market).
