Bloco da Mamma: An Inclusive and Diverse Carnival in São Paulo
Founded in 2019, Bloco da Mamma is a São Paulo carnival bloco that stands out for its inclusive approach and its celebration of LGBTQIAPN+ diversity.
History and Tradition
The bloco emerged during an artistic process at the Os Satyros Theater Company. Alessandra Nassi, Diego Ribeiro, Gustavo Ferreira, and DJ Nassi, all artists of music and theater, created Bloco da Mamma with the aim of rescuing the sociocultural importance of the Street Carnival in São Paulo.
Musical Identity and Repertoire
The band Vrá Power, composed of musical theater artists, leads the bloco's music, presenting classics of Carnival, axé, samba, and MPB. Resident DJs from renowned São Paulo nightclubs complement the setlist with national and international hits.
Special Features and Interesting Facts
- Tribute to Personalities: In each edition, Bloco da Mamma pays tribute to personalities from carnival or the arts. In 2023, it was the turn of Eloína dos Leopardos, a trans actress and pioneer, to be revered.
- LGBTQIAPN+ Culture: The bloco promotes various artistic attractions focused on LGBTQIAPN+ culture and the universe in partnership with the SP Transvisão project.
- Diversity: Bloco da Mamma stands out for its inclusive approach, welcoming revelers of all ages, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and gender identities.
Information about the Parades
The official Bloco da Mamma parade traditionally takes place on the Saturday after Carnival, from 12 pm to 6 pm. The route begins near Avenida Paulista and culminates at Rua Martins Fontes, passing through Praça Roosevelt.
In 2024, the bloco is scheduled to parade on February 17th, from 12 pm to 6 pm, with concentration at Rua Augusta, 1300 – Consolação.
