O Bloco da Poderosa: Celebrating Energy and Empowerment at Carnival
The Bloco da Poderosa, created by singer Anitta in 2016, has become an icon of Rio de Janeiro's Carnival, bringing music, dance, diversity, and freedom to the streets.
History and Origin
Initially called "Bloco das Poderosas" (Block of Powerful Women), the name was changed to "Bloco da Anitta" (Anitta's Block) and subsequently adopted as "Bloco da Poderosa" (The Powerful Woman's Block). The block held rehearsals in Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, Bahia, in its debut year.
Musical Identity and Repertoire
The Bloco da Poderosa is known for its vibrant and inclusive atmosphere, attracting a diverse audience, mainly from the LGBTQ+ community. The musical style is predominantly funk, with elements of reggaeton and Latin rhythms. The performances include Anitta's hits and feature guest artists.
Structure and Performances
The block uses a "trio elétrico" (sound truck) for its performances, marked by energy and elaborate choreographies. The Bloco da Poderosa parades in the center of Rio de Janeiro, in locations such as Rua Primeiro de Março and Avenida Presidente Antônio Carlos. In 2025, it is scheduled to parade on Rua Imperatriz Leopoldina.
