Bloco de Segunda: The Carnival of Irreverence and Criticism
Founded in 1987 by residents of Botafogo, Bloco de Segunda is known for its irreverence and social criticism. With a humorous samba that questioned President Sarney in its inaugural parade, the bloco became a highlight on the Rio de Janeiro carnival scene.
History and Tradition
The bloco's name is due to the date of its first parade, which took place on September 7th, a Monday (segunda-feira in Portuguese). Dissatisfied with the political landscape of the time, the founders decided to organize a protest and critique parade. The choice of Monday was due to the availability of the date, as Saturdays and Sundays were occupied by other popular blocos.
Musical Identity and Repertoire
Bloco de Segunda's repertoire is marked by satire and double meaning. The song lyrics comment on political and social issues, always with a touch of humor. The bloco plays samba and marchinhas, including original songs and carnival classics.
Practical Information
Bloco de Segunda's parade takes place at Cobal do Humaitá, in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro. The bloco follows Rua Voluntários da Pátria, returns on Rua Sorocaba and returns on Rua São Clemente, ending at the starting point.
