Bloco do Barbas: The Critical Spirit of Rio's Carnival
Bloco do Barbas is one of the most iconic street bands of Rio de Janeiro's Carnival, known for its biting humor, political commentary, and spirit of cultural resistance. Founded in 1985, the band is a reflection of the vibrant atmosphere of the bar that gave rise to it, Barbas.
History and Tradition
Bloco do Barbas emerged from a group of friends who met at Barbas, a meeting point for political and cultural discussions during the Brazilian political transition. With Nelsinho Rodrigues, son of writer Nelson Rodrigues, as the main founder, the band was born with the aim of bringing this energy to the streets during Carnival.
Since its creation, Bloco do Barbas has stood out for its biting humor and social criticism, becoming a form of cultural resistance. Despite its focus on political issues, the band is open to everyone, regardless of whether or not they have a beard.
Musical Identity and Repertoire
The musical repertoire of Bloco do Barbas is mainly composed of samba, with lyrics that address political and critical themes, always with a touch of humor. The band also includes traditional carnival songs and current themes in its performances, with references to events and political figures.
Practical Information
