About Bloco Nega véia

The Bloco Nega Véia emerged in 2016 as a neighborhood party and transformed into a carnival bloco, honoring its founder. Known for its axé music, the bloco brings the energy of Bahia's carnival to the streets of São Paulo.

Parading on Carnival Sunday in the Jardim São Luís region, Bloco Nega Véia contributes to the cultural appreciation of the community and has attracted revelers from all over the city, strengthening community ties and promoting diversity in the São Paulo carnival scene.

Bloco Nega Véia: Celebrating Blackness and Female Empowerment

Introduction

Bloco Nega Véia is a carnival collective that emerged in 2013 in Rio de Janeiro as an initiative by Black women to celebrate their culture and break stereotypes.

Identity and Purpose

The name of the bloco is a tribute to elderly Black women, who are often made invisible. Its purpose is to value Blackness, empower the female gender, and fight against racism.

Structure and Performances

Bloco Nega Véia parades with a drum corps of 150 percussionists and a sound car with female interpreters. Its repertoire is composed of samba-enredo with influences from other Afro-Brazilian rhythms.
