Heaven on Earth: Tradition and Renewal in Rio's Carnival

About the Block

Céu na Terra (Heaven on Earth) is a traditional Carnival bloco (street band) from Rio de Janeiro, founded in 2001 in the Santa Teresa neighborhood. Recognized for its vibrant musical and visual identity, the bloco acts as a symbol of the revitalization of street Carnival in the city.

History and Tradition

Céu na Terra emerged from the Núcleo de Cultura Popular Céu na Terra (Heaven on Earth Popular Culture Center), created in 1998 for volunteer work with puppet theater. In 2001, musicians and members of the bloco formed the Orquestra Popular Céu na Terra (Heaven on Earth Popular Orchestra), starting the Carnival performances.

Musical Identity

The Orquestra Popular Céu na Terra presents a diverse repertoire of traditional Brazilian music, including marchinhas, samba, maxixe, and frevo. The original arrangements for brass, percussion, vocals, and harmonies give the bloco a unique sound. The instrumentation includes saxophones, trumpets, trombones, tubas, surdos, caixas, agogôs, ganzás, accordions, banjos, and cavaquinhos.

Parades and Performances

Céu na Terra's performances are marked by giant puppets, a flag bearer, artists on stilts, and decorations inspired by the Santa Teresa tram. The bloco parades through the streets of the neighborhood, infecting the public with its energy and joy.

Cultural Impact

Céu na Terra plays a fundamental role in Rio's Carnival, promoting Brazilian culture and engaging a young audience. The bloco fosters a sense of community and equality among participants, also connecting with other cultures, as demonstrated in the collaboration with musicians from Mozambique in 2016.
