Chame Gente: Where Rio's "Malandragem" Meets Bahian Irreverence
The "Chame Gente" bloco (street band) celebrates the contagious fusion of Rio's "malandragem" (street smarts/hustle) with Bahian irreverence, promoting the union of Brazilian rhythms and cultures. Inspired by the song of the same name, an anthem of Bahian Carnival, the bloco emerged in 2024 to spread joy and preserve Brazilian culture.
History and Tradition
Founded by Armandinho Macedo, the bloco was born as a greeting for the 1976 Carnival. Years later, in collaboration with Moraes Moreira, the song "Chame Gente" came to life, inspiring the creation of the bloco. Associated with the neighborhood of São Conrado, in Rio de Janeiro, "Chame Gente" also performs in other cities, bringing its energy and celebration throughout Brazil.
Musical Identity
The bloco's repertoire is a contagious fusion of Bahian and Carioca (Rio) rhythms, including classics from Filhos de Ghandi, Dodô & Osmar, Noel Rosa, and Moreira da Silva. Hits by Alexandre Peixe, who frequently leads the bloco, and established songs by other Brazilian artists are also part of the setlist. Frevo also has its guaranteed place, further enlivening the performances.
Parades and Performances
The free performances of "Chame Gente" are marked by their high energy and feature an electric trio (sound truck). The parades traditionally take place on the waterfront of São Conrado, in front of the Gávea Golf Club, and in other locations in Rio de Janeiro and other cities. The specific dates and times of the parades vary each year and are announced in advance.
