Cordão do Jamelão: A Family Oasis in São Paulo's Carnival
The Cordão do Jamelão is a traditional carnival bloco (street band) that parades through the streets of Bela Vista, in São Paulo, bringing a welcoming and family-friendly atmosphere to the festivities.
Founded in 2006, the bloco was inspired by the street carnival of Rio de Janeiro, with its repertoire full of traditional marchinhas (carnival songs). During the route, revelers are carried away by classics such as "Mamãe Eu Quero" ("Mommy I Want"), "O Teu Cabelo Não Nega" ("Your Hair Doesn't Deny") and "Allah-La Ô".
A striking characteristic of Cordão do Jamelão is its receptive nature, open to revelers of all ages. The bloco attracts an estimated audience of between 500 and 2000 people, creating a festive and safe environment for parents, grandparents, and children.
The Cordão do Jamelão parade traditionally takes place on the last weekend of Carnival, marking the closing of the festivities in the city. The gathering usually takes place on Rua Maria José, between Rua Fortaleza and Avenida Brigadeiro Luís Antônio. The route includes important streets of Bela Vista, such as Humaitá, Martiniano de Carvalho and Pedroso.
The bloco has an active presence on social media, where it shares information about its parades and maintains contact with revelers. Cordão do Jamelão can be found on Instagram (@cordaodojamelao) and Facebook (BLOCOCORDAODOJAMELAO).
Although not one of the oldest or largest blocos in São Paulo, Cordão do Jamelão has earned its place in São Paulo's carnival, contributing to the strengthening of the tradition of street blocos in the city and offering a folia (revelry) option for those seeking a more intimate and family-friendly celebration.
