"Empurra que Pega do Leblon" Carnival Block
Founded in 1990 by musicians from Bar Clipper, "Empurra que Pega do Leblon" is a family-friendly and inclusive block that enlivens the streets of Leblon during the Rio Carnival.
About the Block
"Empurra que Pega" is one of the most traditional blocks in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, known for its welcoming atmosphere and diverse repertoire. With around 3,000 participants in its parades, the block attracts residents and tourists with its contagious joy.
History and Tradition
The block's name came from the habit of pushing people from Bar Clipper, saying "Get out! Push, it'll catch on!". The block's symbol is a caricature of a fat man with a mustache, holding a beer and a shopping cart full of drinks, a reference to the "drunkards" who inspired the name.
Musical Identity
"Empurra que Pega" presents an eclectic mix of samba, traditional carnival marches, Olodum, funk, and Brazilian rock. The block's instrumentation includes wind and percussion instruments.
Parades and Performances
"Empurra que Pega" parades take place on Avenida Delfim Moreira, with a gathering around 2:00 PM and lasting until around 8:00 PM. The block has attracted an audience of up to 80,000 people in previous years.
