About the Bloc
Founded in 1999 by actress Yeda Dantas, Gigantes da Lira Infantil is the first bloc in Rio de Janeiro aimed at children and families. With colorful costumes, allegories, and circus characters, the bloc promotes the tradition of carnival in a familiar and inclusive environment.
History and Tradition
Started with the expectation of 15 to 20 participants, the bloc attracted more than 50 musicians in its first rehearsal. In its first year, it brought together between 1,500 and 2,000 people in Largo de São Francisco.
Musical Identity
The bloc's traditional band features wind and percussion instruments. Its performances include circus elements such as clowns, stilt walkers, and jugglers. The repertoire is based on traditional carnival music, including marches and sambas, also incorporating other styles such as brega.
Parades and Performances
Gigantes da Lira Infantil traditionally parades on Carnival Sunday, concentrating in the Laranjeiras neighborhood. The typical route covers Largo de São Francisco and adjacent streets.
Cultural Impact
The bloc contributes to the preservation of carnival as a cultural heritage. Its unique and inclusive performances attract a diverse audience, fostering joy and family fun.
