SP Forró

SP Forró

SP Forró is a vibrant and popular bloco in São Paulo, Brazil, that celebrates the traditional Brazilian musical style of forró. Founded in 2014 by a group of forró enthusiasts, the bloco quickly gained popularity for its lively performances and inclusive atmosphere. Unlike many other blocos that focus on samba or other genres, SP Forró stands out by bringing the northeastern rhythms of forró to the streets of São Paulo during Carnival. It aims to provide a space for people to enjoy and dance to the music that often is not featured in the mainstream Carnival celebrations.

The bloco's repertoire includes classic forró songs as well as original compositions, often featuring a combination of accordion, zabumba (a type of bass drum), and triangle, the typical instruments of forró. The group is known for its high-energy performances and attracts a diverse crowd, from those familiar with the forró style to newcomers curious about the rhythms of northeast Brazil. It usually parades in Vila Madalena, a neighborhood known for its lively Carnival street parties. Their parades are characterized by a mix of music, dance and street performances.

SP Forró not only offers a musical experience but also contributes to preserving and promoting forró culture within a big city context. Through its activities, the bloco highlights the cultural richness of this musical genre, often providing a sense of belonging for those who identify with its northeastern roots. They frequently host dance workshops and open rehearsals before Carnival, which help engage the community and prepare the public for the parades. SP Forró's success shows how traditional musical styles can thrive and be celebrated even in urban centers, contributing to the diversity of São Paulo's Carnival.
