Valença Perus: A Samba Block with a Community Soul
Introduction:
In the vibrant heart of São Paulo's periphery, emerges the samba block Valença Perus, a bastion of São Paulo's carnival culture. With its community essence and contagious rhythm, Valença Perus stands out as an active cultural and social agent in its region.
History and Tradition:
Founded in 1992, Valença Perus arose in the wake of the city's urban expansion, when several samba schools were born in the peripheries, strengthening the pulse of São Paulo's carnival. The group quickly evolved into a samba school, the Grêmio Recreativo Clube Social e Escola de Samba Valença Perus (Valença Perus Social and Samba School Recreational Club).
Throughout its history, Valença Perus has played a fundamental role in the Perus community, promoting leisure activities and social actions throughout the year. Its constant activity reinforces its role as a cultural and social institution rooted in the neighborhood.
Musical Identity:
As is characteristic of São Paulo's samba schools, the musical style of Valença Perus is centered on the samba-enredo (theme samba). Each year, the school develops a new samba-enredo that tells a story or honors a specific theme, presented during the official parade.
Special Features:
In addition to its contagious music, Valença Perus stands out for its commitment to the community. The group offers cultural workshops, sports activities and social assistance actions, strengthening the bonds between its members and the neighborhood.
Parades and Participations:
Valença Perus participates in the parades organized by the União das Escolas de Samba Paulistanas (UESP) (Union of São Paulo Samba Schools), taking its samba and joy to neighborhoods such as Vila Esperança, Vila Maria and Butantã. Although it does not parade at the Anhembi Sambadrome, the school maintains a tradition of parades in the neighborhoods, preserving the connection with its community roots.
Although Valença Perus faces challenges related to visibility and resources, its passion for samba and its commitment to the community remain unwavering. The school remains a symbol of peripheral carnival culture, contributing to the diversity and richness of São Paulo's carnival.
