Ze Pereira Block: An Icon of Brazilian Carnival
Founded in 1932 by José Pereira dos Santos, the "Bloco do Ze Pereira" is a traditional samba block that has enlivened the streets of Laranjeiras, in Rio de Janeiro, for decades.
Musical Identity and Repertoire
The block is known for its irreverent lyrics and social criticism, which address current and historical themes. Original compositions, such as "Quem Viver, Verá" (Who Lives Will See) and "Preconceito" (Prejudice), have become anthems of Brazilian carnival.
