Empolga às 9 is one of the most popular carnival blocks in Rio de Janeiro, created in 2003 when a group of friends interested in Brazilian rhythms began to meet at Casa da Matriz, in Botafogo. The block began with informal gatherings at Posto 9 on Ipanema beach, with only percussion instruments. The first official parade took place in 2004 through the streets of Botafogo, establishing its tradition of holding two performances during carnival.
